Transverse Instability Analysis for the Ipns Upgrade

چکیده

The proposed 1-MW spallation neutron source upgrade calls for a 2-GeV rapidly-cycling synchrotron (RCS) with an intensity of 1 . 0 4 ~ 1 0 ~ ~ protons per pulse [l]. The potential exists for the excitation of collective, intensity-dependent transverse instabilities. These can normally be controlled by introducing a betatron tune shift or spread, where care is exercised to avoid single-particle resonance effects. Adjusting the chromaticity using sextuples to vary the head-to-tail phase shift is compared to introducing Landau damping by octupoles. An option for a feedback system is also examined. The momentum spread used for the transverse analysis was obtained from the requirements for longitudinal stability [2].

NSA - 95 - 2 Electron - Proton Instability in the IPNS - Upgrade RCS : Part I

The electron-proton instability in the IPNS-Upgrade RCS is investigated in this report. A dispersion relation applicable to the coasting beam is derived, and the approximations used are stated in order to facilitate the understanding of the underlying mechanism of the instability. The threshold of instability in terms of neutralization of the circulating beam is found for the ENS-Upgrade RCS. T...

Study of Field Ionization in the Charge Exchange Injection for the IPNS Upgrade

The proposed 1-MW neutron spallation source is a rapidcycling synchrotron (RCS) with a design intensity of 1:04 10 protons. A H beam from the linac is injected into the synchrotron via the charge exchange process. Due to the high intensity of the beam, the minimization of beam loss is one of the primary concerns. In this paper, we study a possible beam loss associated with ®eld ionization, whic...

Investigation of Dynamical Behavior (Transverse Vibration) and Instability Analysis of Carbon Nanotubes Conveying Nanofluid

This work focuses on the dynamical behavior of carbon nanotubes, including vibration, wave propagation and fluid-structure interaction. In the present research, transverse vibration of nano fluid conveying carbon nanotubes is investigated. To this end, based on the nonlocal and strain-inertia gradient continuum elasticity theories and by using rod and Euler-Bernoulli beam models, the system’s d...

Electron Cloud Instability Simulations for the LHC

We present results of simulations of transverse single bunch instabilities for the LHC and LHC Upgrade scenarios and in particular first results with electron cloud in the dipole regions. The possibility to use the code HEADTAIL below the threshold of the fast instability is under study and we here discuss a possible way to distinguish numerical noise from true physics.

Active Feedback for Curing the Transverse Resistive Wall Instability in the Sps

The resistive wall impedance in the SPS causes transverse coupled bunch instabilities, that have to be cured by active feedback. The status of the upgrade program for the feedback system (damper) will be reviewed. Results of machine development sessions of 1999 will be presented with emphasis on the performance with LHC type beam. Plans for the year 2000 run are outlined.
